KabarJawa.com — Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) management is preparing 158 additional flights to deal with a surge in passengers during the Eid 2026 transport period.
The increase in flight frequency was carried out to anticipate the increase in community mobility which is expected to occur during the Eid al-Fitr homecoming period.
PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia YIA Branch Office also opened an Integrated Eid Al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah Transport Post which will start operating from March 13 to March 30 2026.
The post will function as a coordination center for various stakeholders in ensuring airport operations continue to run safely and smoothly during the Eid transport period.
Passenger surge predicted during Eid season
General Manager of Yogyakarta International Airport, Ruly Artha, said that opening the Eid Transport Post was a strategic step to strengthen coordination of all parties involved in airport operations during the homecoming period.
“The opening of the Eid Transport Post is a strategic step to increase the preparedness of all airport stakeholders in facing the potential increase in passenger and flight traffic during the Eid period,” said Ruly Artha.
Based on operational data, throughout 2025 Yogyakarta International Airport will serve 4,048,647 passengers. In the same period, 28,649 aircraft movements and 16,144 kilograms of cargo were served at the airport.
This data shows YIA’s role as one of the main air transportation nodes in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and its surroundings.
Entering the Eid 2026 period, the need for air travel is expected to increase. Airport management projects that the number of passengers during the Eid transport period will increase by around 2.2 percent compared to the previous year’s Eid period.
During the operational period of the Eid Al-Fitr Post, Yogyakarta International Airport is estimated to serve around 259,491 passengers. This number is equivalent to an average of 14,416 passengers per day.
Airlines Propose Extra Flights
The increase in the number of passengers during the homecoming period encourages airlines to increase flight schedules. Based on airport management records, a number of airlines have proposed a total of 158 additional flights.
The addition of flights was carried out to adjust to the high demand for air travel during the homecoming period and the Eid return flow.
Apart from increasing the number of passengers, aircraft movements are also expected to increase. Airport management projects the number of aircraft movements to increase by around 3.4 percent compared to the Eid 2025 period.
During the 2026 Eid Transport Post period, total aircraft movements at Yogyakarta International Airport are estimated to reach 1,681 movements.
Ruly Artha stated that increasing traffic requires operational readiness from all parties in the airport environment.
“Given the potential for traffic growth, we need increased vigilance, discipline, and readiness of facilities and services in the airport environment,” he explained.
The peak of homecoming and returning flows is estimated at the end of March
Airport management also projects the peak time for homecoming and returning flows for Eid in 2026.
Based on estimates of passenger movements, the peak homecoming flow is expected to occur on the 8th of Eid or March 13 2026. During this period the number of passengers departing for various destination cities in Indonesia is predicted to increase significantly.
Meanwhile, the peak of the return flow is estimated to occur on H+7 of Eid or March 29 2026. At that time, travelers will start returning to the cities where they work or carry out activities after celebrating Eid al-Fitr in their hometowns.
The surge in passenger numbers during this period usually occurs in a relatively short time, requiring more structured airport operational arrangements.
Integrated Command Post Coordinates Eid Transport Operations
To anticipate a surge in passengers and aircraft movements, Yogyakarta International Airport management has prepared various contingency plans and strengthened coordination between agencies.
The Eid Transport Integrated Command Post which was opened this year involves various stakeholder elements in the airport area. The parties involved include aviation regulators, airport operators, airlines, security forces and related government agencies.
The post is placed in the airport check-in area to facilitate coordination between agencies while providing access to information for airport service users.
With a centralized coordination system, it is hoped that any potential operational obstacles can be handled more quickly.
Yogyakarta International Airport management also emphasizes the importance of synergy between agencies during the Eid transport period.
Through the readiness of airport facilities, increased operational coordination, and additional flight support, airport management targets air transportation services to continue to run safely and smoothly during the Eid 2026 homecoming and return flow periods.
