Bantul, KabarJawa.com – Fires occurred in two hilly areas of Kapanewon Imogiri, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region, Sunday (26/7/2026). At least eight hectares of land in Selopamioro Village and Wukirsari Village were affected by this incident.
The fire is known to have started at eight different points and the steep and difficult to reach terrain means that the extinguishing process cannot be completely carried out using fire fighting vehicles. Residents, volunteers and officers also carried out manual handling by cutting off the fire’s path.
Head of Public Relations of the Bantul Police, Inspector Rita Hidayanto, in her official press statement, said that the first fire report was received from the hilly area of Putat Hamlet, Selopamioro District, at around 15.00 WIB. An hour later, another fire was reported in the hilly area of Wukirsari Village.
“In the incident in Selopamioro, the area of land burned was estimated at five hectares and all of it was Sultan Ground land which is in a hilly area, far from residential areas,” said Rita.
The fires in Selopamioro are known to have occurred in six locations. Four points are to the west of the entrance to Bango Hamlet, while the other two points are in the Putat Hamlet area.
According to Rita, the existence of the fire was first discovered by two witnesses who were in the hilly area. From their location, they could see thick smoke and flames in the distance.
“Witnesses saw clouds of smoke accompanied by flames from a distance of about one kilometer. After learning about the incident, they immediately came down from the hills to notify residents and report the incident to the Imogiri Sector Fire Department and the Pundong Sector Fire Department so that efforts could be made to extinguish it,” he said.
Because the fire location is in a hilly area, the handling process is carried out by adapting to terrain conditions. Officers and the public are trying to stop the spread of the fire so that it does not spread to other areas.
A fire also occurred in Wukirsari Village on the same day. The two affected locations are Karangasem Hamlet RT 06 and Nogosari Hamlet RT 04.
The total area of land burned in the two locations is estimated at three hectares. Rita said the land affected consisted of land owned by residents and part of Sultan Ground’s land.
“The land that was burned consisted of land belonging to residents and Sultan Ground land which is in a hilly area, so the location is quite far from residential areas,” he explained.
The fire in Wukirsari was discovered after a number of witnesses saw smoke coming from behind their house at around 16.00 WIB. When I looked back towards the hills about 20 minutes later, the conditions had changed. The smoke that was previously visible began to turn into flames.
The distance of the fire at that time was estimated to be around 300 meters from the witnesses’ position. They then reported the incident to regional officials and firefighters.
“After confirming that a fire had occurred, the witnesses immediately notified the regional authorities and reported the incident to the Imogiri Sector Fire Department so that it could be handled immediately,” said Rita.
Fire management in these two areas faces terrain constraints. Most of the locations are in steep hilly areas so fire fighting vehicles cannot approach all fire hotspots.
Finally, the extinguishing was carried out manually involving officers, residents and volunteers. One way to do this is to cut off the fire propagation path so that the fire does not continue to spread.
“The condition of the burned land was filled with twigs, dry leaves and vegetation in the form of teak, bamboo and sono trees so the fire spread quite easily. Luckily the location of the fire was quite far from residential areas,” he said.
As of Sunday evening, the fire in the Wukirsari area had been successfully extinguished. However, volunteers are still monitoring to ensure that no new embers or fires re-ignite.
Meanwhile, handling in the Selopamioro area is still continuing. Officers are still cooling and monitoring because a number of fire spots have not been completely extinguished.
Rita said the cause of the fires in both areas was still under investigation. The police also reminded the public to increase vigilance during the dry season, especially when carrying out activities in areas filled with dry vegetation.
