KabarJawa.com – In the last few days, the residents of Yogyakarta have been made anxious by the air temperature being so hot that it feels stinging on the skin.
The afternoons feel much hotter than usual, making many people wonder, what is actually causing the weather in Jogja to feel so extreme recently?
Hot Temperature Phenomenon in Yogyakarta and Java
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) finally provided an official explanation regarding this phenomenon.
Based on weather observations and analysis, it turns out that this heat wave not only hit Yogyakarta, but was also felt in various regions on the island of Java and most of Indonesia.
Based on the official release, BMKG Deputy for Meteorology, Guswanto, explained that the extreme hot temperature with a peak reaching 37.6 degrees Celsius was caused by two main factors, namely the apparent movement of the sun and the influence of the Australian Monsoon wind.
Scientific explanation from BMKG
In its explanation, BMKG said that the sun’s current position is south of the equator, precisely in the apparent movement phase towards the southern hemisphere.
As a result, the solar radiation received by the southern region of Indonesia, including Java and Yogyakarta, becomes much stronger.
Apart from that, the strengthening of easterly winds or the Australian Monsoon is also the cause of increasingly hot air temperatures. This wind brings dry and warm air masses from the Australian region towards Indonesia.
Because the incoming air does not contain much water vapor, cloud formation is very minimal. This causes sunlight to penetrate directly to the earth’s surface without significant obstructions.
This condition has caused regions such as Java, Nusa Tenggara, Kalimantan, southern Sulawesi and Papua to experience high temperatures in the last few days.
Highest Heat Temperature Record
BMKG noted that the maximum temperature in various regions of Indonesia in the last week averaged above 35 degrees Celsius.
On October 12 2025, the highest temperature was recorded in Kapuas Hulu (West Kalimantan), Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara), and Majalengka (West Java) which reached 36.8 degrees Celsius.
A day later, on October 13, the temperature decreased slightly to 36.6 degrees Celsius in the West Sabu (NTT) region. However, on October 14, the temperature rose again and ranged between 34 and 37 degrees Celsius.
Several regions such as Kalimantan, Java, Papua, NTB and NTT again experienced maximum temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius. The Majalengka and Boven Digoel (Papua) regions even recorded the highest temperature reaching 37.6 degrees Celsius, making it one of the most extreme hot spots in Indonesia at the moment.
Potential for rain still exists
Even though hot weather still dominates, BMKG states that the potential for local rain is still possible.
This rain is usually caused by convective activity which appears in the afternoon or evening in several regions such as Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java and Papua.
However, the intensity tends to be light and not enough to reduce temperatures significantly in the near future.
BMKG appeal to residents
BMKG urges the public to maintain their body condition and health amidst this extreme hot weather.
Residents are advised to meet their body fluid needs, wear clothes that are comfortable and not too thick, and avoid exposure to direct sunlight, especially from 10.00 to 15.00, when the temperature reaches its peak.
How long will this hot weather last?
Based on BMKG forecasts, high temperatures in the Yogyakarta area and most of Java are expected to continue until the end of October or early November 2025.
After that, the temperature has the potential to decrease along with the onset of the rainy pattern at the beginning of the rainy season in the southern region of Indonesia.
Many Factors
So, in conclusion, the extreme hot weather currently hitting Jogja is caused by a combination of the apparent movement of the sun and the influence of the Australian Monsoon.
This phenomenon is seasonal and is expected to end in the next few weeks. In the meantime, residents are advised to remain alert, maintain their health and avoid strenuous activities under direct sunlight.***
