KabarJawa.com — A video showing two men pointing a gun at a cellphone counter employee in the Wirobrajan area, Yogyakarta, went viral on social media X on Saturday (11/10/2025) evening.
The footage from the counter’s CCTV was uploaded by the @merapi_uncover account and received many responses from netizens. In the upload, there is a statement from the counter owner who reported the incident.
“Good evening min. I ask for permission to upload a crime incident at my counter. Wirobrajan area min. So two people took our cellphone at gunpoint min. We have reported the police regarding this incident,” wrote the statement in the upload.
The short video shows two men on a motorbike stopping in front of a cellphone counter called Prista Cell on Jalan Kresna Number 10, Wirobrajan.
One of the perpetrators came down and pretended to ask for a Bluetooth headset. However, not long after, the man took out an object resembling a gun and pointed it at the counter employee.
The employee known as S tried to defend the rose gold OPPO A83 cellphone he was holding. The perpetrator continued to insist until he managed to seize the cellphone and fled south on a cream-brown Honda Scoopy motorbike.
The victim suffered a loss of IDR 1,651,000 and immediately reported it to the Yogyakarta Police.
The arrest of the perpetrator took place quickly
After receiving the report, the Yogyakarta Police Criminal Investigation Unit team immediately carried out an investigation. PS Head of Public Relations for the Yogyakarta Police, Inspector Gandung H, confirmed the report of alleged theft with violence.
“We moved immediately after receiving the report. The team carried out crime scene investigation, examined witnesses, and secured CCTV footage from the counter,” said Inspector Gandung.
Based on CCTV footage, the police immediately recognized the characteristics of the perpetrator. In less than an hour, officers managed to arrest a man with the initials AG (27), a resident of Pakuncen, Wirobrajan.
Based on AG’s statement, the police then arrested his colleague, RP (33), a Semarang resident who lives in the Klitren area, Gondokusuman. RP was secured in front of Indomaret Piere Tendean, Wirobrajan.
Type of weapon used
The results of a search of the two perpetrators revealed the fact that the gun used was not a real firearm. The gun is a plastic toy made from LIN DA brand No:333 made in China, without bullets or ammunition.
However, the actions of the two perpetrators were still categorized as a crime of theft with violence.
The police confiscated the toy gun as evidence along with a number of other items, including a rose gold OPPO A83 cell phone, a brown and cream Honda Scoopy motorbike with the plate number AB 5215 ID, cash in denominations of Rp.
From initial investigations, the police suspected that the action had been planned. RP was tasked with holding the victim at gunpoint and taking the cell phone, while AG waited on the motorbike to escape after the victim lost control.
Inspector Gandung added that RP admitted to buying the toy gun online several days before the incident. He also admitted that he was inspired by the robberies he often saw on social media.
The two perpetrators are now being detained at the Yogyakarta Police and charged with Article 365 of the Criminal Code concerning Theft with Violence or Article 363 of the Criminal Code concerning Theft with Aggravation, which carries a maximum sentence of nine years in prison.
Police Urge Public to Be More Vigilant
Yogyakarta Police appealed to the public to remain careful, especially shop owners and cellphone counters who are often targets of spontaneous crimes.
Inspector Gandung emphasized that the police would continue to increase patrols in areas dense with economic activity such as Wirobrajan.
“We appreciate the quick reports from victims and the public who helped with the investigation. The speed of reporting really helped us uncover this case in a short time,” said Inspector Gandung.
This case is a reminder for the public to increase awareness of potential crimes that can occur at any time, even by simple methods such as pretending to be a buyer.
