The 22 -year -old young man was killed in a well in Gunungkidul, the joint team conducted a dramatic evacuation

KABARJAWA – The calm atmosphere in the Logandeng Hamlet RT 24 RW 25, Logandeng Village, Whawon Playen, Gunungkidul, immediately turned tense when residents found a young man falling into the well.

This tragic event occurred on Friday, August 1, 2025 around 14.00 WIB and resulted in the life of a student named Yahya Awaludin Abdul H (22 years) floating at the bottom of a 12 meter deep well.

The Head of the Fire Department UPT (Damkar) Gunungkidul, Handoko, confirmed that this incident was classified in the category of wells.

He stated that his party received reports of residents and immediately mobilized the rescue team to the location.

Chronology of Citizens’ Events and Responses

Handoko said the incident began when a resident named Yanto, who lived next to the victim’s house, became the first person to suspect the incident. Around 14.00 WIB, Yanto received news that someone fell into a well at Mbah Yanti’s house, the victim’s grandmother.

“They immediately checked the location and found a well in a half -open condition, even though it was usually tightly closed with asbestos,” he said.

Yanto saw the sandals that Yahya used to be lying on the edge of the well. He immediately suspected that the victim fell into the well because Yahya was known to never take off his sandals, even just to leave the house for a while.

Without wasting time, Yanto immediately contacted the Damkar Gunungkidul Prajat to ask for help.

The well which is the scene has a total depth of 12 meters with 6 meters of which is filled with water.

The diameter of the well measuring about 1.2 meters. Although active and has been fitted with a water pump, the well is only protected by a 50 cm high wall and a cover from asbestos which seems not safe enough.

“The calm condition on the surface of the water makes it difficult for residents to ensure the existence of the victim in it. There is no spark, there is no movement. However, the irregularities of the well cover position and the existence of sandals reinforce the allegation,” he added.

Dramatic evacuation by a joint team

The Damkar Gunungkidul Rescue Team arrived at the location at 14.30 WIB. They immediately make preparations and ensure that all evacuation equipment is safe. At 15.29 WIB, one of the team members descended into the well with complete safety.

Evacuation was dramatic. The team found that the victim was unconscious at the bottom of the well. They managed to lift the victim’s body to the surface at 15.38 WIB, nine minutes after the first rescue entered.

“Shortly after that the victim was immediately taken to Nur Rohmah Hospital, but his life was beyond help,” he said.

The evacuation process involves various rescue elements, ranging from TRC BPBD DIY, Damkar Gunungkidul, GES, Save Rescue Indonesia, Gading Rescue, Bhabinkamtibmas local, to local residents. All parties work together quickly, coordinated, and full of dedication.

Handoko stated that the success of the evacuation process could not be separated from the preparedness of the joint team and the active role of the community.

He also reminded that the security of wells should be a serious concern, especially for houses that still use traditional wells as a source of water.

Yahya is the first child of two family heads (KK) who live in the house. As a student, he is known to be quiet but diligently studying. The victim’s family, especially his grandmother, Mbah Yanti, could not hold back tears when his grandchild’s body arrived at the funeral home.
