1 Muharram 2025: Beginning from the New Year of the Islamic Priority

Entering the Islamic New Year 1447 Hijri, Muslims were welcomed by the arrival of the Muharram month which is one of the four noble months in the Islamic calendar.

The 1st of Muharram marked the beginning of the Hijri New Year and became an important moment to increase worship, especially sunnah fasting.

Based on the Hijri calendar released by the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia, 1 Muharram 1447 H fell on Friday, June 27, 2025.

Thus, Sunnah Fasting 1 Muharram can be fulfilled on that day as a form of worship organized by the messenger of God.

When is the time for fasting 1 Muharram pronounced?

The intention of fasting 1 Muharram can be spoken at night before fasting, precisely after sunset until dawn. However, for those who forget to intend at night, they are allowed to intend in the daytime as long as they have not done things that cancel the fast.

As quoted in the hadith of the Muslim history delivered by Aisyah RA, the Prophet Muhammad had been fasting even though he had not intended since night, during not eating and drinking since morning:

“Do you have food?” We replied, “No.” The Messenger of Allah (may peace with him) said, “Then, I’m fast.” (HR. Muslim)

Fasting Intention 1 Muharram

This is the intention of fasting 1 Muharram in Arabic, Latin, and its translation:

I mean fasting this month which is prohibited for God Almighty

Latin: Dissi Syahri Al-Muharrami Sunnatan Lillâhi Terror

Meaning: “I intend to fast the Muharram Sunnah month because of Allah Ta’ala.”

Sunnah fasting schedule in the month of Muharram 1447 H/2025 AD

The following is an important schedule for sunnah fasting in the month of Muharram 1447 H:

• Friday, June 27, 2025: Fasting 1 Muharram
• Saturday, July 5, 2025: Fasting Tasu’a (9 Muharram)
• Sunday, July 6, 2025: Ashura Fasting (10 Muharram)
• Monday, July 7, 2025: Fasting 11 Muharram
• Wednesday-Friday, 9-11 July 2025: Fasting Ayyamul Bidh (13-15 Muharram)

Fasting Law 1 Muharram and its Priority

Sunnah fasting on the first day of the month of Muharram is highly recommended by the scholars. In the book “Reaching Blessings in the Hijriyah Months” it is stated that fasting today can be an eraser of sin for fifty years.

The hadith narrated by hafshah ra from the messenger of Allah (may peace on it) says:

“Anyone who fasts on the last day of the month of Dzulhijjah and the first day of Muharram, then Allah will forgive his sins for fifty years.” (HR. Ibn Hajar)

In addition, in Muslim history also confirmed:

“The most important fasting after Ramadan is fasting in God’s month, namely the month of Muharram.” (HR. Muslim)

Can you fast throughout the month Muharram?

Some scholars recommend that Muslims increase fasting throughout the month of Muharram because of the magnitude of the virtues of this month. Rasulullah SAW once said:

“If you want to fast for a month besides Ramadan, then be satisfied in God’s month, Muharram.” (Al-Bihahaqi Clock)

Fasting this month also includes worship in the noble months (al-asyhur al-Hurum), as the Prophet said:

“Satisfied the month of patience (Ramadan) and three days later, and satisfied during the noble months.” (HR. Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah)

The month of Muharram is a priority time and is a golden opportunity for Muslims to increase good deeds.
