Barefoot, they tread the earth with full awareness, as if they want to reunite with the land that holds the spirits of their ancestors.
This sacred tradition is called Hajad Dalem Kuthomoro, a nyadran ritual that the Yogyakarta Palace carries out every time before the holy month of Ramadan approaches.

This procession is not just a grave pilgrimage. The palace interprets it as a spiritual practice to connect the mind between today’s generation and the founders of Javanese civilization.
In silence, prayers flow as a form of devotion, respect and request for blessings to the kings who reside eternally in the Tomb of King Imogiri.
The courtiers started their journey from the Regent’s Office, Juru Kunci Puroloyo, which is in Paseban, Imogiri Village. They walked hand in hand towards Bangsal Srimanganti, a sacred building that stands firmly at the gate of the Sultan Agung Tomb Complex.
They accompany each step with a bowed posture, a calm face, and a guarded heart, reflecting the practice of nrimo and eling which is the Javanese philosophy of life.
Hundreds of stairs going uphill did not dampen your steps. In fact, every step feels like a test of inner sincerity. The stone steps are a symbol of man’s journey towards soul perfection.
When the courtiers finally arrived at Bangsal Srimanganti, the quiet atmosphere turned into a spiritual space full of prayerful vibrations.
The procession continued with a joint tahlil and flower scattering at the grave of Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma, the great king of Islamic Mataram, as well as other ancestors of the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace.
The aroma of flowers mixed with hundreds of smoke wafts through the air, giving off a magical feel that is difficult to explain by reason. This is the place where Javanese history, spirituality and culture blend together without the boundaries of time.
The commander of the Imogiri Kings’ Tombs, KRT Hastono Ningrat, emphasized that the Palace carries out the Kuthomoro tradition regularly every year.
Uborampe Kuthomoro
The palace chose the middle of the month of Shaban or Ruwah in the Javanese calendar as the time for the implementation because this month the palace believes is the most appropriate time to send prayers to the ancestors.
“We carry it out in the middle of the month before the fasting month every year. The palace maintains this tradition routinely without change,” said KRT Hastono Ningrat after the procession, Tuesday (3/2/2026).
The sacredness of this tradition is increasingly felt through the uborampe Kuthomoro that the courtiers carry. Panewu Imogiri, Slamet Santoso, explained the uborampe.

The palace did not treat the uborampe as an ordinary object. The day before the procession, the Palace received and deposited all the equipment at the Puroloyo Regent’s Office. This practice reflects respect and inner readiness before entering a sacred space.
“The event started yesterday with the delivery of the Kuthomoro uborampe. The palace carried out the handover at the Puroloyo Regent’s pavilion. After staying overnight, this morning we took the uborampe to the grave for tahlil and nyekar,” explained Slamet Santoso.
The fragrant aroma of lisah konyoh and hundreds does more than just scent the room. The palace interprets it as a symbol of glorifying and protecting the good name of the ancestors.
The fragrance becomes an invisible bridge between the real world and the ancestral world, between living humans and souls who have fulfilled their duties in the world.
