KabarJawa.com – The death of Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono (PB)
The king, who was known to be wise and full of charisma, breathed his last breath at Indriati Hospital, Solo Baru, at the age of 77 years.
After undergoing treatment for illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure, his condition became increasingly weak until he finally died at around seven in the morning.
His body was then buried at the Imogiri Kings tomb complex, Yogyakarta, on Wednesday, November 5 2025.
The funeral procession was solemn, accompanied by thousands of people who came to pay their last respects to a figure who during his lifetime was considered a symbol of greatness and protector of Javanese culture.
However, recently, new questions have emerged among the public about whether the King of the Solo Palace receives a salary like state officials in general?
There are no official records regarding the salary of the King of Surakarta
The question regarding the salary of the King of the Solo Palace has apparently been a topic of public discussion for a long time. Until now, there are no official records stating that the king received a fixed salary from the state or from palace institutions.
The position of king at the Kasunanan Palace in Surakarta is not an administrative position like a civil servant, but rather a cultural and spiritual symbol that is held in high esteem by the Javanese people.
The king’s role focuses more on preserving customs, safeguarding cultural heritage, and being a moral role model for his people.
Therefore, it is not yet known whether there is a special salary system for kings such as that which applies to formal government positions.
A Salaried Servant
What is clear is that there are other parties within the palace who receive wages, namely the courtiers. They are loyal servants who dedicate themselves to carrying out traditional duties and maintaining the continuity of activities in the palace.
According to several sources, the salary of civil servants varies depending on their position and length of service.
In 2019, the lowest salary was recorded at around IDR 90,000 per month for new courtiers who started serving in 2004.
Meanwhile, for those who hold high positions such as deputy pengageng, the salary can reach IDR 1.5 million per month. However, this figure cannot be used as a definite reference because it can change.
Managed by the Traditional Council Institution
Financial affairs and payroll at the Surakarta Palace are managed by the Traditional Council Institute (LDA), the official institution responsible for the welfare of the courtiers.
The LDA is led by Gusti Moeng, the younger brother of the late Pakubuwono XIII Hangabehi. Since February 2019, the salary payment system for civil servants has used a more modern method, namely through bank accounts.
This is a form of adaptation of the palace to the times without abandoning the traditional values that have been upheld for centuries.
Priceless Symbol
From all these explanations, it can be concluded that the position of King of the Solo Palace is not a profession, but rather a noble mandate to safeguard the nation’s cultural and historical heritage.
Javanese people respect the king not because of his wealth or position, but because of the spiritual and moral role he fulfills.
In the Javanese cultural view, a king’s honor is often measured by his sincerity, wisdom and devotion to the people and ancestors.***
