The new year in the Hijri calendar begins with the month of Muharram, one of the holy months full of virtue in Islamic teachings. In 2025, 1 Muharram 1447 H fell on Friday, June 27.

Muslims are encouraged to take advantage of this momentum by increasing pious deeds, one of which is by running the sunnah fasting.

Fasting in the month of Muharram, especially on the first day, is a very organized practice and exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad. In addition, various traditions mention extraordinary rewards and priorities for anyone who practices it.

Fasting Intention 1 Muharram 2025

For Muslims who want to fast on the first day of Muharram, the following is the intention of his intention:

Arabic writing:
I mean fasting from the month of God Almighty

Latin:
Damiithu Sharuma Syahri Al-Muharrami Sunammed Sunnatan Lolli Taalana Ta Ta Ta

It means:
“I intend to fast the Muharram Sunnah month because of Allah Ta’ala.”

Sunnah fasting schedule in the month of Muharram 1447 h

The Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia has set the Hijri Calendar 1447 H. The following is an important fasting schedule during the month of Muharram 2025:

  • 1 Muharram (27 June 2025): Muharram Early Fasting
  • 9 Muharram (5 July 2025): Tasu’a fasting
  • 10 Muharram (July 6, 2025): Ashura fasting
  • 11 Muharram (7 July 2025): Complementary fasting fun

Time to read fasting intentions

The intention of fasting Sunnah 1 Muharram can be spoken at night, namely Thursday night on June 26, 2025.

However, if you forget to intend at night, one can still intend in the morning before slipping the sun (Dzuhur time), with the condition of not eating, drinking, or doing things that cancel fasting since dawn.

This is based on a valid hadith narrated by Muslims, where the Prophet had intended to fast during the day when not eating and drinking from morning.

Fasting Priority 1 Muharram and Moon Muharram

The month of Muharram is known as Ashhurul Hurumwhich is one of the four holy months in Islam that is respected by God Almighty. There are many priorities that participate in fasting this month, including:

1. Best fasting after Ramadan

The Prophet Muhammad said that the most important fasting after fasting in the month of Ramadan was fasting in the month of Muharram. This is confirmed in the hadith of Muslim history:

“Fasting is most important after the month of Ramadan fasting in the month of God, Muharram.” (Muslim SDM)

2. Getting reward equivalent to 30 days

In another hadith it is stated that fasting one day in the month of Muharram can be rewarded like fasting for 30 days.

“One day of fasting in the month of Muharram commensurate quickly 30 days.” (HR Thabrani)

3. Sin Eraser up to 50 years

One of the other extraordinary virtues is the abolition of sin for 50 years for those who fast on the last day of the Dzulhijjah month and the first day of Muharram.

“Anyone who fasts on the last day of Dzulhijjah and the first day of Muharram, his sin for 50 years will be forgiven.” (HR Hafshah ra)

4. Including one glorious month

Muharram with three other months namely Rajab, Dzulqa’dah, and Dzulhijjah are included in illegal months. During these months, worship worship is highly recommended and more severe sin.

“Indeed, the number of months before God is twelve months … among them there are four illegal months.” (QS At-Taubah: 36)

Fasting and fun intentions

For those who want to continue fasting on the 9th and 10th day of Muharram, the following intention:

Tasu’a Fasting (9 Muharram):

I mean tomorrow fast from the performance of Judaism for God Almighty
“I intend to fast the sunnah tasu’a because of Allah Ta’ala.”

Ashura Fasting (10 Muharram):

I mean ashur.
“I intend to fast asyura sunnah because Allah Ta’ala.”

The Messenger of Allah (may be peaceful with him) also urged fasting the day before or after people are engrossed in differentiating from Jews who only fast in 10 Muharram.

Fasting in the month of Muharram, especially in 1 Muharram, is a light but good gift.

In the midst of worldly busyness, starting the Islamic New Year by fasting is the right way to renew intention, cleanse the soul, and open a better new sheet in life.

Let’s take advantage of this month by increasing the charity of worship, alms, dhikr, and of course the sunnah fasting. Hopefully this Hijri new year will bring blessings, forgiveness, and glory for all of us.
