Flash floods hit Padukuhan Jono Tancep Ngawen, residents’ houses and vehicles were submerged

KabarJawa.com – Flash floods hit residential areas in Padukuhan Jono, Tancep Village, Kapanewon Ngawen, Gunungkidul Regency, Tuesday (17/02/2026) at around 15.00 WIB.

The water came suddenly from the hilly area and went straight into the residents’ homes.

The heavy rain that fell on the area since noon caused the water discharge to increase drastically.

The water flow from the upper area overflowed and carried mud, stones and tree branches into the yard and inside the house.

In a short time, puddles as high as an adult’s knees submerged a number of buildings and motorized vehicles parked in front of the house.

Residents tried to save themselves and secure items that could still be moved.

Water Comes Suddenly, Residents Evacuate Independently

Residents said the water was flowing fast from the north of the settlement.

Some of them immediately carried their children and headed for their neighbors’ houses which were located at higher altitudes.

Other residents helped the elderly and children get out of their homes before the inundation continued to increase.

A number of household items were not saved due to the strong current.

Several motorbikes were reported to have been dragged and suffered damage to their engine and electrical parts.

The fences and walls of residents’ houses were also affected by the impact of currents and materials carried by the flood.

BPBD Conducts Evacuation and Data Collection

Gunungkidul Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) officers and volunteers went to the location after receiving reports from residents.

The team evacuated residents who needed assistance and monitored the condition of affected buildings.

The Chief Executive of BPBD Gunungkidul, Purwono, said that his party was still collecting data on the number of houses and residents’ assets that were damaged.

“Officers are still collecting data on losses and cleaning up flood material. We ask residents to remain alert, especially if the rain falls again with high intensity,” he said.

BPBD personnel were deployed to clean up mud and materials that blocked neighborhood road access.

The joint team also counted the number of buildings affected and estimated the value of damage, including vehicles and household furniture.

Until this news was published, the total losses due to the flash flood could not be ascertained.

Geographical Conditions and Citizen Awareness

The Ngawen area, which is in a hilly area, has sloping land contours which accelerate the flow of water towards settlements during high rainfall.

Flash floods in this area often occur when rain falls with high intensity in a short period of time.

Residents hope that mitigation measures will be taken to reduce the risk of similar incidents, such as repairing water channels and strengthening dams at vulnerable points.

Tuesday night, residents and volunteers were still cleaning up mud and remaining flood material.

They clean the house and the surrounding environment together.

Even though the water has receded, residents of Tancep Village are still monitoring weather developments.

The regional government and volunteers stated that they remain prepared to face the potential for further extreme weather in the Gunungkidul Regency area.
