2 Deaths, Dozens of Houses Damaged

KabarJawa.com – Extreme weather in the form of strong winds hit the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) from Friday night, (23/1), at 21.20 WIB until Saturday, 24 January 2026.

This phenomenon resulted in a number of infrastructure damages, fallen trees, and even casualties in the Sleman area.

Based on the official report from the DIY Communication and Informatics Service (Kominfo), it was stated that this condition was triggered by strong wind activity in the upper air layer at an altitude of around 762 meters. Wind speeds were recorded at 10-45 knots or the equivalent of 18-83 km per hour.

“This phenomenon is an indirect impact of Tropical Cyclone Luana in the northwestern region of Australia,” reads a written statement from Kominfo DIY via Instagram @kominfodiy, as reported KabarJawa.com on Saturday, January 24, 2026.

• Power grid damaged: 13 points.
• Vehicles affected: 6 units.
• Internet network damaged: 1 point.

Yogyakarta City

There were 16 incident points in 8 kemantren. Impacts include:

• Fallen trees: 14 trees.
• Affected business premises: 1 unit.
• Tower affected: 1 unit.

Bantul Regency

There are 8 incident points in 3 Kapanewon. Impacts include:

• Fallen trees: 7 trees.
• House damaged: 1 unit.
• National road access disrupted: 1 point.

Kulon Progo Regency

There is 1 incident point in Kapanewon Kalibawang. Impacts include:

• House damaged: 1 unit.
• Fallen trees: 1 tree.

Gunungkidul Regency

Based on monitoring up to 15.00 WIB, there were zero incidents in the Gunungkidul area.

Official Handling and Advice

Currently, related parties consisting of TRC BPBD, TNI, POLRI, Tagana, and community volunteers are carrying out assessments, physical handling in the field, and intensive coordination. The government emphasizes that this data is temporary and can change according to developments in the situation on the ground.

Responding to weather conditions that still have the potential to be extreme, Kominfo DIY issued a firm appeal to the public.

“We are advised to remain alert to the potential for extreme weather, avoid vulnerable areas such as large trees and billboards, and follow official information from the regional government and BPBD DIY,” wrote Kominfo.
