KABARJAWA – Bantul Regency Government Forms a Fisheries Supervisory Cadre in 2025. The formation of this river supervisor cadre to protect the public aquatic ecosystem which is increasingly alarming condition

Bantul Regent, Abdul Halim Muslih highlighted environmental conditions in Bantul, especially public waters, which he called was in a very alarming condition.

He revealed that the fish population in the main rivers of Bantul slumped dramatically due to the practice of destructive fishing.

“Today we are talking about saving our aquatic biota. I emphasize: No more fish genocide in our rivers. Potas, stun, dynamite, all of which are mass destruction methods that kill all aquatic ecosystems. This is dangerous and we must stop together,” said the Regent.

He explained that Bantul Regency was in the downstream region of almost all large rivers in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, ranging from River Oyo, Opak, Code, Bedok, Winongo, to Progo.

These rivers were once a source of protein from the community as well as the habitat of abundant endemic fish. Now, most of the biological wealth is only a memory.

“Previously, waders, shrimp, and local fish were abundant in our river. Now, it is very difficult to find. This is no longer a matter of economy, but about the future of our ecosystem,” he continued.

The Regent emphasized that the vital role of self -help fisheries supervisory cadres as the spearhead of environmental rescue at the community level.

The cadres will become the government’s strategic partner in providing education, conducting direct supervision in the field, and spearheading the conservation movement.

As a form of support, the government provides official attributes for cadres, ranging from uniform shirts, hats, ID cards, headlamps, to spaki devices (fish area supervision facilities). Development activities will take place in three stages, starting from the first stage today.

The Regent also reminded the public to be wise in restoking or spreading fish in the river. He stressed the importance of choosing local endemic fish and avoiding predatory fish such as tilapia, which is invasive and threatening the sustainability of original species.

The Regent gave appreciation to all supervisory cadres who had been willing to intervene to protect the aquatic ecosystem.

The Regent hopes that this activity will become an initial milestone in a big movement to improve the quality of the environment and protect natural resources in Bantul.

“We start today, we continue without stopping, for the sake of the sustainable future,” he said. (EF Linangkung)
