KABARJAWA- Yogyakarta Mayor, Hasto Wardoyo, shocked the atmosphere of Malioboro on Tuesday night (1/7/2025).
Hasto arrived in the Malioboro area to attend the Wagen Tuesday art performance. However, he actually held an impromptu competition that surprised visitors.
Cigarette butts finding competition in Malioboro
Hasto announced the competition to find and pick up cigarette butts along the Malioboro area. He immediately asked all visitors to move quickly.
Visitors who packed Malioboro scattered. They traced the road and aisle in the area to find scattered cigarette butts.
Hasto did not determine the winner based on the number of cigarette butts that were successfully collected. He actually determined the winner based on the age of the participants who participated in the competition.
Hasto selects and selects two winners, the oldest and youngest. He appointed 68 -year -old Paulina Surani and Inara, who was 4.5 years old as the winner of the impromptu competition that night.
Hasto immediately handed over a cash prize of Rp1,000,000 to the two. The audience who watched the event immediately cheered to see the elderly and toddlers receive prizes.
Hasto asserted that the competition to find cigarette butts was a form of commitment of the Yogyakarta City Government to realize Malioboro free of smoke.
He said the Yogya City Government would continue to enforce the regional regulations without smoking in Malioboro and other regions.
“I invite all tourists and Yogya residents to maintain the cleanliness of Malioboro. This area is our tourism icon that we must take care of together,” Hasto said in a firm tone.
Hasto reminded tourists who visited the city of Yogya not to litter. He asked all parties to put trash in the place that had been provided so that Malioboro remained clean and comfortable.
“Let us all maintain and maintain tourist destinations in the city of Yogyakarta,” he added.
The importance of waste management
Hasto stressed the importance of awareness and discipline in waste management. He asked residents to start changing behavior and no longer throwing trash in any place.
Hasto said the problem of environmental cleanliness would be resolved if all parties were actively involved, starting from the government, non -governmental organizations, to the general public.
“The most important thing is to change the behavior of the community in dispose of garbage. Because the problem of environmental cleanliness requires active participation from all elements of society,” he said.
Paulina Surani, one of the winners of the impromptu competition, admitted that he was very surprised when his name was called. He did not expect the Mayor of Yogya to give him Rp1,000,000 in cash that night.
“I did not expect to get one million from Mr. Hasto. Thank you, sir,” Paulina said, holding back emotion.
Paulina said she would use the prize money for her grandson’s education fees. He admitted that his grandchildren had just graduated from elementary school and were looking for junior high school. Paulina hopes that the money will be enough to buy the needs of her grandchildren.
“I will use this money for the cost of finding my grandchildren’s school. He is just looking for junior high school. Hopefully enough,” said Paulina who lives in Kampung Gemblakan over RT 10 RW 04 Suryatmajan, Danurejan.

A said he would save some of the prizes and the rest he would use to buy souvenirs when he returned to his hometown in Grobogan, Central Java.
