JAVA NEWS – The government declared January 1 2026 as a national holiday through the Three Ministerial Decree.
So what is the status on December 31 2025 and January 2 2026? Check out the complete explanation of holiday rules, WFA, as well as the list of national holidays and collective leave for 2026 here.
As the new year approaches, the question of the status of holidays at the end of December is once again being widely discussed.
Many people want to confirm whether December 31 2025 is a holiday, considering that January 1 2026 has been officially designated as a red date by the government. This certainty is important, especially for workers and business actors who are planning year-end agendas.
The government routinely determines the schedule for national holidays and collective leave through a Joint Decree of Three Ministers. This decree was prepared taking into account the commemoration of national and religious holidays, as well as to maintain a balance between work needs and people’s rest time.
Holiday Status January 1 2026
January 1 2026 is officially designated as the Gregorian New Year national holiday. This determination is not new, because the Indonesian government has recognized January 1 as a national holiday since 1967. The aim is to provide space for people to celebrate the New Year and at the same time rest after carrying out activities throughout the year.
New Year holidays are also part of the series of Christmas and New Year holidays or what is often called Nataru. Many people use this momentum to gather with family, travel, or simply restore energy before returning to their work routine.
However, recognizing January 1 as a national holiday does not necessarily make New Year’s Eve or December 31 an official holiday.
Is December 31 2025 a holiday?
Based on the provisions in the Three Ministerial Decree, December 31 2025 is not designated as a national holiday or collective leave. This means that this day remains a normal working day for offices, public services and most business sectors.
In December 2025, the government will only designate December 25 as Christmas Day and December 26 2025 as Christmas holiday. There are no additional red dates accompanying the new year.
Even though it is not a holiday, workers still have the option to apply for annual leave on December 31 2025. Applying for this leave depends on the remaining leave rights of each worker as well as the company or agency’s internal policies. Many workers take advantage of annual leave to extend the year-end holiday period.
Work From Anywhere Policy Towards the End of the Year
Apart from regulating holidays, the government also issued a work from anywhere (WFA) policy ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays. This policy is regulated in the Circular Letter of the Minister for Administrative Reform and Bureaucratic Reform Number B/531/M.KT.02/2025.
In this circular, heads of government agencies are given the authority to implement WFA for State Civil Apparatus, both at the central and regional levels, for 3 working days. The WFA schedule in question includes:
- Monday, December 29, 2025
- Tuesday, December 30 2025
- Wednesday, December 31 2025
This policy was issued as a follow-up to the letter from the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Number KP.15/360/M.EKON/12/25 dated 17 December 2025. The aim is to maintain the smooth running of public services while anticipating the density of community mobility in the year-end period.
However, the implementation of WFA is not absolute. A number of sectors directly related to public services and production activities can be excluded.
These sectors include health, manufacturing, hotels, shopping centers, and the food and beverage industry. Agencies or companies have the authority to adapt this policy to their respective operational needs.
What is the Status of January 2 2026?
After the New Year holiday on January 1 2026, work activities on January 2 2026 returned to normal. The government does not set this date as collective leave. Thus, unless there is an internal policy from a particular company or agency, January 2 2026 remains a working day.
